Rhadamanthus

Enough of verbal evidenee. Now, just divest yourself of that purple, and we will see what you have in the way of brands. Goodness gracious, the man’s a positive network! Black and blue with them! Now, what punishment can we givehim? A bathin Pyriphlegethon? The tender mercies of Cerberus, perhaps?

Cynic

No, no. Allow me,—I have a novel idea; something that will just suit him.

Rhadamanthus

Yes? I shall be obliged to you for a suggestion.

Cynic

I fancy it is usual for departed spirits to take a draught of the water of Lethe?

Rhadamanthus

Just so.

Cynic

Let him be the sole exception.

Ἅλις ἤδη τῶν μαρτύρων. ἀλλὰ καὶ ἀπόδυθι τὴν πορφυρίδα, ἵνα τὸν ἀριθμὸν ἴδωμεν τῶν στιγμάτων. παπαί, ὅλος οὗτος πελιδνὸς καὶ κατάγραφος, μᾶλλον δὲ κυάνεός ἐστιν ἀπὸ τῶν στιγμάτων. τίνα ἂν οὖν κολασθείη τρόπον; ἆρʼ ἐς τὸν Πυριφλεγέθοντά ἐστιν ἐμβλητέος ἢ παραδοτέος τῷ Κερβέρῳ;

The Downward Journey, or the Tyrant Perseus (Lucian, Vol. 2. Harmon, Austin Morris, editor. London: William Heinemann, Ltd.; Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 1915.) — 28 focus

RHADAMANTHUS

Enough witnesses! Come, strip off your purple robe that we may see the number of your marks. Well, well! The fellow isall livid and crisscrossed; indeed, he is black and blue with marks. How can he be punished? Shall he be thrown into the River of Burning Fire or turned over to Cerberus?

CYNISCUS

No, no! If you like, I will suggest you a punishment that is new and fits his crime.

RHADAMANTHUS

Speak out; I shall be most grateful to you for it.

CYNISCUS

It is customary, I believe, for all the dead to drink the water of Lethe?

RHADAMANTHUS

Certainly.

CYNISCUS

Then let this man be the only one not to drink it.

The Ferry Perseus (Selections from Lucian. Smith, Emily James, translator. New York; Harper Brothers, 1892.) — 28 focus

Rhadamanthos

Enough already of witnesses! But strip him of his purple, too, so that we may know how many brand-marks he has. Dear me, he is perfectly livid and covered with marks, or, rather, he is black and blue with them. Now, how should he be punished? Shall we cast him into the fiery stream or hand him over to Kerberos?
