What kept Odysseus back, if this be so,
From going himself? Had he some cause for fear?

So bleibe hier und harre, bis der Mann erscheint;
Ich aber gehe, daß er mich nicht hier erspürt,
Und sende wieder an das Schiff den Späher hin.

Und später will ich, wenn ihr allzulange mir
Zu säumen scheinet, wiederum denselben Mann
Hieher dir senden, trügerisch in falsche Tracht
Gehüllt als Schiffsherr, daß er nicht erkennbar sei.

554. mvp-comment-394-1 ἀμφὶ σοῦ * νέα] This emendation of Auratus has been generally received. And although the MS. reading may be possibly defended by the comparison of such phrases as τίνος δὴ χάριν ἕνεκα, etc. (see especially Thuc. 8. 92, ὅσον καὶ ἀπὸ βοῆς ἕνεκα), the meaning as well as the grammar is distinctly improved by the change.
