CH. 1
Thou child of misery!
1095
No mightier power hath this decreed,
1095
But thine own will and deed
Hath bound thee thus in grief,
Since, when kind Heaven had sent relief
And shown the path of wisdom firm and sure,
Thou still hast chosen this evil to endure.

Die Tage floh'n mir, einer nach dem andern, hin;
Waldtauben mir erlegte; doch, traf mein Geschoß,
Daun gebrach's an Feuer mir,
Freiwillig mag kein Schiffer ihrem Strande nah'n;
295

Dies thaten Atreus' Söhne mir, o Jüngling, an,
Dies that Odysseus: mögen einst Olympos' Herrn
Vergeltend ihnen lohnen, was sie mir gethan!

Philoctetes
Never, never I
1195
Be sure of that. Tho' thunder- bearing Jove
Should with liis lightnings blast me, would I go ?
No ! Let Troy perish, perish all the host
Who sent me hero to die ; but, O my friends !
Grant me this last request.

Philoctetes
1146
Now on the margin of the hoary deep
Laughing he sits, and poizes in his hands
My life's support, which none hath ever borne.
O my dear bow, from these unhappy hands
Wrested by force, if thou hast sense, how grieved
Dost thou behold the toils of Hercules
No more employ thee ! Changed thy noble lord,
1145
Thou seest a vile deceiver guide thy shafts;
Thou seest his hateful and detested arts
Hostile to me, and all the thousand wiles
Which to ensnare me he hath basely forged.

εἶδον] ‘They saw with delight.' The sleep of Philoctetes favoured their purpose and also relieved them from his crying. ἄσμενον, which Dindorf reads, is not in point. They did not leave him when they saw how glad he was to rest, but when, to their great relief, they saw him asleep. ἐκ πολλοῦ σάλου] (1) 'After much tossing.' He slept the more soundly because of the previous discomfort on-board-ship. (2) Hermann understands these words metaphorically, After my long trouble.'
