CH
Not unto thee alone hath sorrow come,
Daughter, that thou shouldst carry grief so far
Beyond those dwellers in the palace-home
Who of thy kindred are
And own one source with thee.
What life hath she,
Chrysothemis, and Iphianassa bright,
And he whose light
85
Is hidden afar from taste of horrid doom,
85
Youthful Orestes, who shall come
85
To fair Mycenae’s glorious town,
85
Welcomed as worthy of his sire’s renown,
Sped by great Zeus with kindly thought,
And to this land with happiest omen brought?

Der wuthgeschlagnen Inachid' uralter Hain;
5
Schaust du Mykenä's Veste, reich an goldnem Schaz,
Und hier der Pelopsenkel unheilschwangres Haus,
10
15
Der Freunde liebster, was zu thun, berathet schnell:
Denn schon erweckt der Sonne strahlenvoller Glanz
Der Vögel Morgenstimmen uns zu hellem Schall;
20
Beredet euch zusammen; denn wir stehen da,
Wo's nimmer gilt zu säumen, wo's der That bedarf.

Chorus
154
Sad news indepd the hapless messenger
To Argos brought, that\spoke the wished return
Of thy loved father to his native soil ;
Fatal the night when Agamemnon fell
155
Or by a mortal or immortal hand ;
The w^ork of fraud and lust, a horrid deed !
Whoe'er performed it.
Eleo. O detested feast !
0,jCfe;y, the bitt'rest sure; that ever rose !
With him I perished then. . But may the gods
Repay the murderers ; never may they hear
160
The voice of joy, or taste of comfort more !

Chorus
137
Yet neither will thy griefs or pray'rs récal
Thy father o'er that lake, whose sullen stream
All, sprung from mortal race, are doom'd to pass.
Why then not moderate thy sorrows? Why
Thus waste away in wild excess of grief,
Which from thy ills gives no redemption? Why
This fondness for intolerable woe?"

12. mvp-comment-11-1 σῆς ὁμαίμου καὶ κασιγνήτης] ‘Thine own sister.' Cp. infr. The Electra, like the Antigone, lays great stress on the force of fraternal affection; and a peculiar tenderness seems to have been attached to the word κασίγνητος. Cp. infr. 1164, Ant. 915, ὦ κασίγνητον κάρα.
