Ist es ein Fischer, der
Sich, mühselig härmt bei schlaflosem Fang,

Ist es der Göttinnen Eine von Olympos' Höhn, 1
Oder ein flutender Bosporosstrom,
Die wo den unmuthschweren Mann
Irren geseh'n? Ach, wer sagt es uns? Traurig wohl,
Daß ich, in langen Müh'n umherschweifend, ihn

Nirgend fand, glücklichen Lauses froh,
Und nirgend sah des sinnberaubten Mannes Spur!

890. mvp-comment-579-1 "But mine eye should fail to find where he is, the vanished one." Although the ordinary sense of ἀμενηνός, ‘without force' ( ἀ-μένος), is sufficient here (cp. especially, Hom. H. Ven. 189-91, μή με ζῶντ᾽ ἀμενηνὸν ἐν ἀνθρώποισιν ἐάσῃς ναίειν, ἀλλ᾽ ἐλέαιρ᾽· ἐπεὶ οὐ βιοθάλμιος ἀνὴρ | γίγνεται, ὅστε, κ.τ.λ.), the context suggests the further association of 'a vanished life,' as if from α, μένω.
