Wohl hebt die Mutter, die alternder Tage Last,
595
Von Alter weiß, hinschleppt, wann sie vernahm die Botschaft
Von des Verirrten Wahnsinn,
Klagenden, klagenden
Wehruf nicht, wie der helljammernde Vogel,
Die Unselige, nein, weinen in wildem Schmerzlaut
600
Wird sie, wird mit den Händen
Sich zerschlagen die Brüste,
Daß es hallt, und das Silberhaar zerraufen.
Zweite Gegenstrophe.

Commentary

Commentary (Lewis Campbell, 1879) (OCR draft) (Commentary (Lewis Campbell, 1879)) focus

615. mvp-comment-418-1 (1) 'He has proved a mighty sorrow to his friends.' Cp. Trach. 1075, θήλυς εὕρημαι τάλας: Aesch. Pers. 743, νῦν κακῶν ἔοικε πηγὴ πᾶσιν εὑρῆσθαι φίλοις. But πένθος is not elsewhere used of a person, and it is possible that εὕρηται may have a middle signification: (2) 'He has procured a mighty sorrow for his friends.' See Veitch, Gr. Irr. V. s. v. εὑρίσκω.
