O sinnloser Sinne todschwangere
1205
Verirrungen ach! schauet Mord, schauet Tod,
verübt am Geschlecht des selbsteignen Stamms!

O Sohn, jung entriſs ein jung Todesloos,
ach ach, ach ach,

O dementiae peccata dura, mortifera!
O qui cognatos cernitis occisores et occisos! Heu infelicem consiliorum meorum exitum!. Heu, nate, rate, iuvenis, immaturo fato vae! extinctus , mihi ereptus es, mea, non tua, perditus vecordia.

O error of my insensate soul,
Stubborn, and deadly in the fateful end!
O ye who now behold
Slayer and slain of the same kindred blood!
O bitter consequence of seeming-wise decree!
1265
Alas, my son!
Strange to the world wert thou, and strange the fate
That took thee off, that slew thee; woe is me!
Not for thy rashness, but my folly. Ah me!

O wehe, sinnlosen Sinnes, todbringender,
Starrer Verirrungen Frucht!
Weh! Ihr seht den Mörder, seht
Auch den Erschlag'nen hier: sie sind Eines Stamms!
Weh über meines Rathes Unseligkeit!
1230
weh, Sohn, Sohn!
Früh sinkend, ach, frühem Tod,
(Weh, weh, weh, weh!)
Schiedst du vom Sonnenlicht!
Die Frucht meines Wahnes, nicht deine Schuld!

Ah me ! What deadly woes from the bad mind
Perpetual flow. Thus in one wretched house
Have you beheld the slayer and the slain !
O fatal counsels ! O unhappy son !
Thus with thy youthful bride to sink in death ;
Thou diest, my child, and I alone have killed thee !

Woe for the sins of a darkened soul, stubborn sins, fraught with death! Ah, ye behold us, the sire who hath slain, the son who hath perished! Woe is me, for the wretched blindness of my counsels! Alas, my son, thou hast died in thy youth, by a timeless doom, woe_is_me!—thy spirit hath fled,—not by thy folly, but by mine own!

Commentary (Lewis Campbell, 1879) (OCR draft) (Commentary (Lewis Campbell, 1879)) focus

1262. mvp-comment-709-1 στερεά may be explained, either with Dindorf, (1) Propter duram et inexorabilem Creontis mentem, = Stubborn, by hypallage for στερεῶν φρενῶν ἁμαρτήματα, or more simply (2) as Pindar speaks of στερεαὶ ὀδυναί, = * Hard to endure.' The first (1) is best.

1265. mvp-comment-710-1 A confusion of ὤμοι ἐμῶν βουλευμάτων, ὡς ἄνολβα, and ὤμοι ἐγὼ ἄνολβος τῶν ἐμῶν βουλευμάτων. Ε. on L. pp. 17, 67.

1266. mvp-comment-711-1 νέῳ ξὺν μόρῳ By a strange doom.

1268. mvp-comment-712-1 ἀπελύθης Thou wast cut off. The word has some something of the notion of Shuffling off this mortal coil. Cp. 559.
