No es eso, no; sino que estos ciudadanos de Thebas, descontentos de mis mandatos, no pudiendo soportar mi yugo, andan tiempo há sacudiendo la cabeza y murmurando secretamente: que me odian, sí, que me odian. Tengo la certeza de que ellos han inducido á los otros, mediante recompensa, á cometer el atentado. ¡Ay... el oro! ¡Cuán funesto es este metal para los hombres! Él causa la ruina de los pueblos, él saca de sus hogares á los ciudadanos, y corrompe y lleva hasta el crimen á las almas honradas; él ha enseñado á los hombres todas las perfidias y todas las impiedades... Pero ¡ah! los culpables que se han dejado ganar ya llevarán en su día el condigno castigo. Juro por el respeto con que miro al Supremo Júpiter, y tú al centinela oye bien mi juramento; que si no me descubrís y presentáis ante mi vista al que ha cavado esa sepultura con su propia mano, la muerte no será bastante suplicio para vosotros; os haré colgar vivos en castigo de vuestro atrevimiento para que así conozcáis por qué medios debéis en adelante de enriqueceros; para que sepáis el límite que debéis poner en vuestra codicia; para que aprendáis que las ganancias ilegítimas son con frecuencia más funestas que provechosas.
