Pues vas á saberlo, si escuchas lo que presagiá mi ciencia, Sentado me hallaba en mi antigua silla augural, teniendo junto á mí un receptáculo de aves de toda especie, cuando súbitamente oigo que arman un estrépito tre- mendo, elamando con unos gritos salvajes y de mal agíiero, y conocía que se estaban desgarrando las unas á las otras, por el vehemente batir de sus alas. Temblando de espanto acudí a hacer un sacrificio en el fuego de los altares; pero la llama brillante no salia de las víctimas; sino que la grosura de las piernas se derrctía, y se absorbía en las cenizas, levantando luego una espesa, rugiente humarcda, y quedando los huesos de los miembros dispersos y separados de la grasa que los envolvia. Tales' son los pormenores de que me daba cuenta este niño —¡y que son presagios funestos de un sacrificio inútil!...—Porque este niño es quien á mí me gula como yo dirijo á los demás. Y estos males han sobrevenido á la ciudad por tu causa; porque nuestras aras y nuestros hogares están repletos de los despojos de las aves y de los perros que se han nutrido con el cadáver del misero hijo de Edipo. Los dioses, pues, no aceptan ni nuestras preces, ni nuestros sacrificios, ni la llama de nuestras víctimas: ni ave alguna exhala grito de buen agúero, pues se han abrevado en la sangre de aquel cadáver. Medita en esto, hijo mío. El error es común á todos los mortales; pero el que yerra, si repara los males causados por su error, si no permanece impasible, obra feliz y sábiamon. te. La arbitrariedad es madre del error. Cesa, pues, de molestar á ese difunto; deja de herir á un cuerpo inerte. ¿Qué valor hay en matar á un muerto segunda vez? Este consejo me lo inspira tu interés; mira que son útiles sicmpre los avisos de la prudencia.

1060. mvp-comment-612-1 τἀκίνητα .. φράσαι Τo utter what ought not to be mooted even in thought.' 1062. (1) These words are generally interpreted as interrogative. Do I really seem in what I have already said to do so in regard to you? i. e. You at least are not likely to reward me for my prophecy. And this is on the whole the most pointed way of taking the words. Wecklein understands them to mean, (2) 'Methinks, so far as you are concerned, I do speak so; i. e. My speech will not bring you gain. In the former case (1) τὸ σὸν μέρος ίς τ. σ. μ. τῆς δοκήσεως: in the latter (2) it is τ. σ. μ. τῶν ἀποβησομένων ἐκ τοῦ λόγου.
