Precepts of Statecraft

1. Athenian youths from eighteen to twenty years of age were called ephebi. For one year they were trained chiefly in gymnastics and military drill, then for a year they served as guards on the frontier. cf. Aristotle, Constitution of Athens, chap. xlii.
2. Apparently a quotation from a comedy. See Kock, Com. Att. Frag. iii. p. 495.
