[1] The Syracusians in the meantime from divers parts and also from their spies had certain intelligence that the fleet was now at Rhegium: and therefore made their preparations with all diligence and were no longer incredulous, but sent unto the Siculi, to some cities men to keep them from revolting, to others, ambassadors, and into such places as lay upon the sea, garrisons; and examined the forces of their own city, by a view taken of the arms and horse, whether they were complete or not, and ordered all things as for a war at hand and only not already present.

[1] In the meantime came in from all quarters to the Syracusans, as well as from their own officers sent to reconnoitre, the positive tidings that the fleet was at Rhegium ; upon which they laid aside their incredulity and threw themselves heart and soul into the work of preparation. Guards or envoys, as the case might be, were sent round to the Sicels, garrisons put into the posts of the Peripoli in the country, horses and arms reviewed in the city to see that nothing was wanting, and all other steps taken to prepare for a war which might be upon them at any moment.

ὡς ἐπὶ τούτοις —cf. VII. 45 ὡς ἐπὶ τούτοις παρεσκευά‐ ζοντο, ‘under these circumstances.’

ἔνθα μέν = πρὸς τοὺς ὑπηκόους.

πρὸς δὲ τούς = πρὸς τοὺς αὑτονόμους. Cf. Isocr. 2, 18 ἵνα τὰς μὲν φεὑγωσι, πρὸς δὲ τὰς προθυμότερον ἔχωσιν. The δέ generally follows the preposition.

περιπόλια in Italy and Sicily= φρούρια in Attica.

ἐν τῇ χώρᾳ — i.e. in the territory belonging to Syracuse
