XLV. Déjà, cependant, les Syracusains recevaient de toutes parts, et en particulier de leurs propres agents, la nouvelle positive que la flotte était à Rhégium. Dès lors il n’y eut plus de doute, et tous à l’envi s’empressèrent de pourvoir à la défense. Ils envoyèrent de tous côtés chez les Sicèles, ici des troupes de garde, là des ambassadeurs, mirent garnison dans les forts disséminés sur la surface du pays, firent dans la ville l’inspection des armes et des chevaux, et veillèrent à ce que le matériel fût en bon état; en un mot, ils disposèrent tout comme pour une guerre imminente, attendue d’un instant à l’autre.

ἔνθα μέν = πρὸς τοὺς ὑπηκόους.
