So redete Alkibiades. Die Athener aber, nachdem sie
ihn gehört hatten und nach ihm die Egestaner und etliche Leontinische
Verbannte, welche bittend auftraten und mit Erinnerung an die
Eidschwüre für sich um Hülfe flehten, da drangen sie noch viel stärker auf
den Kriegszug, als vorher. Nikias nun sah wohl ein, daß er sie mit
seinen Gründen nicht mehr auf andere Ansichten bringen würde,
dachte aber, daß er sie durch großen Umfang der Kriegsrüstungen,
wenn er diese in hohem Maße von ihnen fordere, leicht anderes Sinnes
machen werde. So trat er denn zum zweiten Male auf und redete,
wie folgt:

So Alkibiades. Die Athener wurden unter dem Eindruck
seiner Rede und der Bitten der Egester und der vertriebenen
Leontiner, welche nun auch auftraten und sie bei ihrem Eide
beschworen, ihnen zu Hilfe zu kommen, noch weit mehr als
schon vorher auf den Zug versessen. Nikias aber, welcher
einsah, daß er mit seinen früheren Gründen nichts mehr aus
richten würde, sie jedoch, wenn er ihnen die gewaltigen An
forderungen und Kosten einer solchen Unternehmung vorstellte,
vielleicht noch anderes SinneS zu machen hoffte, trat nun
nochmals auf und sagte:

XIX. Ainsi parla Alcibiade. Entraînés par ce discours, émus par les prières des exilés d’Égeste et de Léontium, qui étaient venus à l’assemblée et suppliaient, au nom de la foi jurée, de ne par les laisser sans secours, les Athéniens embrassèrent l’expédition avec plus d’ardeur encore qu’auparavant. Nicias sentit bien qu’il ne les ébranlerait pas en revenant sur les mêmes raisonnements; mais il espérait encore, par l’immensité des préparatifs et la longue énumération qu’il en ferait, changer leurs dispositions. Il s’avança de nouveau et leur parla ainsi :

ὁρκίων —see e. 6, 2.

σφίσι —being the indirect reflexivc, this refers to the subject of ἱκέτευον.

εἰ πολλὴν ἐ —this hope of N. was, as Freeman says, ‘not quite honest.’ It is strange that he did not resign.

αὐτοῖς αὖθις —with παρελθών.
