[1] Hereupon the ambassadors went again into the city and, having consulted with the people, made answer that they would first acquaint the Athenians with it, and if they would consent, they would then accept the conditions; till then, they desired a suspension of arms and not to have their territory wasted. Upon this he granted them so many days truce, as was requisite for their return, and for so long forebore to waste their territory.

— hätten sie euch in irgend einem Dinge beleidigen lassen, noch auch
würden sie jetzt ruhig zusehen, sondern nach Kräften zu Hülfe ziehen.
Sie ermähnen euch bei den Eiden, die unsere Väter geschworen haben,
an der Bundesgenossenschaft Nichts zu ändern." ¹²

Mit dieser Antwort kehrten die Gesandten abermals in

beraten und Archidamos darauf erwidert, man wolle seinen
Vorschlag zunächst den Athenern mitteilen und, wenn die

sagen, solange sie mit uns verbündet gewesen, hätten sie euch
in der Not noch nie im Stich gelassen und würden das auch
jetzt nicht tun, sondern euch nach Kräften zu Hilfe kommen.
Bei dem Eide unserer Väter beschwören sie euch, dem alten
Bunde auch ferner treu zu bleiben.

Unsere Kriege, wenn es sein soll, müssen wir fortan für uns allein führen, oder auch sie beilegen, wie es uns gemeinsam recht dünkt, wider den Fremdling aber, wenn er kommt, in vernünftiger Eintracht zusammenhalten, so gewiss die Niederlage der Einzelnen dem Ganzen Gefahr bringt; Bundesgenossen aber oder Schiedsrichter sollen nie mehr ins Land gerufen werden. Bei diesem Verfahren werden wir für jetzt Sicilien der frohen Aussicht nicht berauben, der Athener und des Bürgerkrieges mit einemmale los zu werden, und in Zukunft in unabhängiger Freiheit und vom Ausland weniger behelligt darin wohnen.
