πρώτη —for in 414 στρατιὰν ἄλλην ἐψηφίσαντο πἐμπειν.
ὁλκάδες μὲν . . πλοῖα δὲ ἐξ ἀνάγκης —transports and smaller vessels requisitioned from private owners. Cf. c. 22.

ηὐπόρησαν —sc. προσβαλεῖν.
ἀγορᾷ οὐδὲ ἄστει —‘not admitting them to a market, nor even into the citv, but only granting water and anchorage.’
Ῥήγιον —Athens had made a treaty with R. in 433 B.C. On the meaning of ‘Italy’ see c. 2, 4n. The modern name, Reggio di Calabria, curiously illustrates Ῥήγιον τῆς Ἰτ.
λόγους ἐποιήσαντο —‘made overtures to.’
Χαλκιδεῦσι —see c. 3, 3. The refusal of Rhegium was the greatest blow, as it had supported Athens before in Sicily.
