Nun kam auch von Kamarina Meldung, wenn sie kommen
wollten,, würden sie zu ihnen übergehen, und daß die Syrakusaner
eine Flotte bemannen. Da segelten sie mit der ganzen Macht an der
Küste hin gegen Syrakus, als sie aber daselbst keine Schiffe bemannt
fanden, steuerten sie weiter gegen Kamarina, legten am Gestade an
und schickten den Herold zu ihnen. Die Kamarinäer aber nahmen
sie nicht auf, sondern sagten, der geschlossene Vertrag laute nur, daß
sie die Athener aufnehmen wollten, wenn sie mit Einem Schiffe
erschienen, außer wenn sie selbst deren mehrere herbeiriefen. Die
Athener fuhren demnach unverrichteter Sache wieder zurück, landeten auf
dem Gebiet von Syrakus und plünderten. Als aber Syrakusische
Reiter erschienen und einige der zerstreuten Leichtbewaffneten
zusammenbieben, fuhren sie wieder nach Katana zurück.

kusischen Küste, wo sie sich ans Plündern machten. Als jedoch

αὖθις —as before from Catana to Syr., so now from Syr. to Camarina.

σχόντες —Livy's tenere.

αἰγιαλός is Ionic.

τὰ ὅρκια —probably the reference is to the treaty of Gela arranged by Hermocrates in 424. Camarina became an ally of Syracuse.

μιᾷ νηί —so that there could be no possibility of hostile action.

κατά τι —some point in Syr. land.

ἱππέων —the difficulty that Nicias had expected.
