Zur selbigen Sommerzeit kämpften sowohl die Andern,
wie es sich gerade Jedem schickte, als auch auf Sicilien die Sicilianer
selbst unter einander und auch die Athener mit ihren Bundesgenossen.
Was nun Erwähnenswerthes die Verbündeten mit den Athenern
ausführten, oder auch die gegen die Athener fochten, das will ich hier
aufzählen. Da Charöades, Feldherr der Athener, damals schon im
Kampfe gegen die Syrakusier gefallen war, so zog Laches, der nun
den Oberbefehl über sämmtliche Schiffe hatte, mit den
Bundesgenossen gegen Mylä, die Stadt der Messenier. Es lagen aber in Mylä
zwei Bürgerabtheilungen der Messenier als Besatzung, die denen
von den Schiffen auch einen Hinterhalt legten. Die Athener jedoch
und die Bundesgenossen schlugen die in dem Hinterhalt in die Flucht,
tödteten ihnen viele Leute, und gegen den Wall stürmend nöthigten sie
sie vergleichsweise die Burg zu übergeben und mit ihnen gegen
Messens zu Felde zu ziehen. Und auch die Messenier, als dann die
Athener mit den Verbündeten heranrückten, glichen sich mit ihnen aus,
indem sie Geißeln stellten und auch sonst Bürgschaft gewährten.

[1] The same summer divers others, as they had several occasions, made war in Sicily; so also did the Sicilians amongst themselves and the Athenians with their confederates. In Sizilien gab es in diesem Sommer Krieg an allen

Mylai. Die Besatzung von Mylai bildeten zwei Abteilungen
Messenier, und diese hatten den von den Schiffen kommenden

Bundesgenossen aber schlugen die Leute aus dem Hinterhalt in
die Flucht, töteten viele davon und zwangen dann die Gegner
durch einen Angriff auf den Wall, die Burg vergleichsweise
zu übergeben und mit ihnen gegen Messene zu fechten. Die
Messenier aber mußten sich, als die Athener und ihre Ver
bündeten ihnen darauf vor die Stadt rückten, ebenfalls ergeben,
Geiseln stellen und sonstige Sicherheit gewähren.

Commentary on Thucydides: Book 3 (Thucydides, Book III. Marchant, Edgar C., editor. London: Macmillan and Company, 1909.) focus

καὶ ἄλλοι —it is impossible to explain these words with certainty. The reference appears to be to the Sicels, but it is a strange way of designating them. καὶ ἄλλα is read by some, but (1) it is doubtful if ἄλλα ἐπολέμουν is a possible constr., and (2) even so, the change of subject in the antithetic clause— ἃ δὲ μάλιστα ἄξια κτλ.—is surprising. It is clear that Thuc. felt little interest in the affairs of Sicily in this year. The capture of Messena was the only important event.

ἐρύματι = φρουρίῳ .

οἱ Μεσσήνιοι —strangely placed in the middle of the gen. abs., but the order is not without parallel. Messena commands the strait between Sicily and Italy, and was therefore a valuable acquisition.

πιστὰ παρασχόμενοι —‘giving trustworthy assurances.’ πιστά is to be taken as pred., not as substantive.
