CXIII.

[1] Some space of time after this, the outlaws of Boeotia being seized of Orchomenus and Chaeroneia and certain other places of Boeotia, the Athenians made war upon those places, being their enemies, with a thousand men of arms of their own and as many of their confederates as severally came in, under the conduct of Tolmidas the son of Tolmaeus.

[2] And when they had taken Chaeroneia, they carried away the inhabitants captives and, leaving a garrison in the city, departed. In their return, those outlaws that were in Orchomenus, together with the Locrians of Opus and the Euboean outlaws and others of the same faction, set upon them at Coroneia;

[3] and overcoming the Athenians in battle, some they slew and some they took alive.

[4] Whereupon the Athenians relinquished all Boeotia and made peace with condition to have their prisoners released. So the outlaws and the rest returned, and lived again under their own laws.

[1] Some time after this, Orchomenus , Chaeronea , and some other places in Boeotia , being in the hands of the Boeotian exiles, the Athenians marched against the above-mentioned hostile places with a thousand Athenian heavy infantry and the allied contingents, under the command of Tolmides, son of Tolmaeus. They took Chaeronea , and made slaves of the inhabitants, and leaving a garrison, commenced their return.

[2] On their road they were attacked at Coronaea, by the Boeotian exiles from Orchomenus , with some Locrians and Euboean exiles, and others who were of the same way of thinking, were defeated in battle, and some killed, others taken captive.

[3] The Athenians evacuated all Boeotia by a treaty providing for the recovery of the men;

[4] and the exiled Boeotians returned, and with all the rest regained their independence.

[1] Some time after this¹ the Athenians under the command of Tolmides son of Tolmaeus, with one thousand hoplites of their own and the respective quotas of their allies, made an expedition against Orchomenus and Chaeroneia and some other places in Boeotia, which were in the possession of the Boeotian exiles and therefore hostile. And after taking Chaeroneia and selling its inhabitants into slavery, they placed a garrison in it and departed.

[2] But while they were on the march they were attacked at Coronea by the Boeotian exiles from (rchomenus, together with some Locrians and Euboean exiles and others who held the same political views, and were defeated, some of the Athenians being slain and others taken alive.

[3] Accordingly the Athenians evacuated the whole of Boeotia, making a treaty upon the stipulation that they should receive back their prisoners.

[4] And so the Boeotian exiles were restored, and they as well as all the rest of the Boeotians again became autonomous.
