Thucydides History of the Peloponnesian War 4.52

[1] The next summer, in the very beginning, at a change in the moon the sun was eclipsed in part; and in the beginning of the same month happened an earthquake.

[2] At this time the Mytilenaean and other Lesbian outlaws, most of them residing in the continent, with mercenary forces out of Peloponnesus and some which they levied where they were, seize on Rhoeteium, and for two thousand Phocaean states render it again without doing them other harm.

[3] After this they came with their forces to Antander and took that city also by treason. They had likewise a design to set free the rest of the cities called Actaeae, which were in the occupation formerly of the Mytilenaeans, but subject to the Athenians; but above all the rest Antander, which when they had once gotten (for there they might easily build galleys, because there was store of timber, and Mount Ida was above their heads), they might issue from thence with other their preparation and infest Lesbos, which was near, and bring into their power the Aeolic towns in the continent. And this were those men preparing.

[1] In the first days of the next summer there was an eclipse of the sun at the time of new moon, and in the early part of the same month an earthquake.

[2] Meanwhile, the Mitylenian and other Lesbian exiles set out, for the most part from the continent, with mercenaries hired in Peloponnese , and others levied on the spot, and took Rhoeteum, but restored it without injury on the receipt of two thousand Phocaean staters.

[3] After this they marched against Antandrus and took the town by treachery, their plan being to free Antandrus and the rest of the Actaean towns, formerly owned by Mitylene but now held by the Athenians. Once fortified there, they would have every facility for shipbuilding from the vicinity of Ida and the consequent abundance of timber, and plenty of other supplies, and might from this base easily ravage Lesbos , which was not far off, and make themselves masters of the Aeolian towns on the continent.
While these were the schemes of the exiles,

von Verräthern. Ihr Plan war nämlich, auch die übrigen sogenann- ^{1 2 3}

[1] At the very beginning of the next summer a ¹ partial eclipse of the sun took place at new moon, and in the early part of the same month

[2] an earthquake. Also the citizens of Mytilene and of the other cities of Lesbos who were in exile, the majority of them setting out from the mainland, hired some mercenaries from the Peloponnesus, gathered still others on the spot, and took Rhoeteum; but they restored it again without having done any damage, on receiving two thousand

[3] Phocaean staters. ² After this they made an expedition against Antandros and took the city through treachery on the part of the inhabitants. It was, in fact, their plan to free the rest of the cities known as the Actaean cities, ³ which had hitherto been in the possession of the Athenians, though inhabited by Mytilenaeans, and above all Antandros. Having strengthened this place, where there was every facility for building ships—timber being available on the spot and Ida being near at hand —as well as for providing other equipments of war, they could easily, making it the base of their operations, not only ravage Lesbos, which was near, but also master the Aeolic towns on the mainland. Such were the plans upon which they were preparing to embark.

[1] At the very commencement of the following summer, there was an eclipse of the sun at the time of a new moon, and in the early part of the same month an earthquake.

[2] Moreover, the exiles of the the Mytilenaeans and the other Lesbians, setting out most of them from the continent, and having taken into their pay an auxiliary force from the Peloponnese, and raised troops from the neighbourhood, took Rhoeteum, but restored it without injury on the receipt of 2000 Phocaean staters.

[3] After this they marched against Antandrus, and took the town through the treachery of the inhabitants. And their design was to liberate both the other ¹ Actaean towns, as they were called—which the Athenians held, though formerly the Mytilenaeans owned them—and, above all, Antandrus; having fortified which, (for there were great facilities for building ships there, as there was a supply of timber, with Ida close at hand,) and sallying from it, as they easily might, with resources of every other kind, they purposed to ravage Lesbos, which lay near, and to subdue the Aeolian towns on the mainland. Such were the preparations which they meant to make.

[1] Aestatis autem insequentis initio statim circa novi-lunium sol ex parte defecit, ejusdemque mensis initio terne motus exstitit.

[2] Et Mytilenaei aliique Lesbii exsules, quorum plerique ex continente veniebant, auxiliis ex Peloponneso mercede conductis, et manu illinc apud se ipsos collecta, Rhcetium occupant; et acceptis duobus Phocia- corum staterum millibus rursus reddiderunt, nulla injuria facta.

[3] Et postea quum copias adversus Antandrum duxissent, urbem interveniente proditione capiunt. Atque propositum eorum erat, quum ceteras civitates, quae Actaeae vocantur, quas prius possessas a Mytilenaeis Athenienses tenebant, in libertatem vindicare, tum vero omnium maxime Antandrum, atque ubi eam munissent, nam et aedi· ficandarum navium facultas erat propter lignorum illic eopiam Idamque montem prope adjacentem, et collecto reliquo etiam apparatu inde proficiscentes Lesbum vicinam infestare, et in suam potestatem redigere iEolica oppida, quae in continente erant.

[4] Et hi quidem haec paraturi erant.

[1] Akanthier!
