L’hiver suivant, les Athéniens qui étaient en SA réunis aux Grecs leurs alliés et à ceux des Si cules qui avaient embrassé leur parti pour échapper au joug de Syracuse, attaquèrent Inessa, place appartenant aux Siculos et dont la citadelle était au pouvoir des Syracusains; mais, n’ayant pu s en rendre maîtres, ils se retirèrent. Pendant leur marche, lagtf; nison syracusaine fondit sur l’arrière-garde des Athéniens» φΒ était composée d’alliés, mit en fuite une partie de l’armée et to tua beaucoup de monde. Plus tard Lâchés et les Athéniens effectuèrent quelques descentes dans les environs de Locres et défirent près du fleuve Cécinos trois cents Locriens venus à leur rencontre avec Proxénos fils de Capaton. Ils se retirèrent en emportant les armes prises sur l’ennemi.

[1] The Athenians that were in Sicily in the beginning of winter, together with the Grecians of their league and as many of the Siculi as having obeyed the Syracusans by force, or being their confederates before, had now revolted, warred jointly against Nessa, a town of Sicily, the citadel whereof was in the hands of the Syracusans. And they assaulted the same;

[2] but when they could not win it, they retired. In the retreat, the Syracusans that were in the citadel sallied out upon the confederates that retired later than the Athenians, and charging, put a part of the army to flight and killed not a few.

[3] After this, Laches and the Athenians landed some time at Locris and overcame in battle by the river Caicinus about three hundred Locrians, who with Proxenus, the son of Capaton, came out to make resistance; and when they had stripped them of their arms, departed.

desgenossenschaft mit den Syraknsanern abgefallen, nun den Krieg
gegen diese mitfochten, einen Zug gegen das sicilische Städtchen Jnessa,
dessen Burg die Syrakusaner besetzt hielten. Sie griffen an, konnten
es aber nicht nehmen und zogen wieder ab. Bei diesem Abzüge fielen
die Syrakusaner von der Besatzung den nach den Athenern
abmarshcirenden Bundesgenossen in den Rücken, schlugen im Angriff einen Theil
des Heeres in die Flucht und tödteten eine nicht geringe Zahl. Danach
machten Laches und die Athener von der Flotte einige Landungen auf
der lokrischen Küste, besiegten in einem Treffen beim Flusse Kmkinos
dreihundert Leute der Lokrer, die mit Proxenos, dem Sohne des
Kapatou, zur Abwehr herbeigeeilt waren, nahmen die Waffen der
Getödteten und zogen wieder ab.

Im folgenden Winter unternahmen die Athener in Sizilien

Sikelern, die bisher unter Herrschaft der Syrakuser gestanden

Dopo questa rotta Lachete con gli Ateniesi fecero parecchie volte scala dalle navi lungo il fiume Caicino nella Locride , e vinsero in un conflitto circa trecento Locri che con Prosseno figlio di Capatone vollero opporsi loro ; gli disarmarono, e quindi continuarono la loro gita.

ξύμμαχοι —“the name allies shows that they remained distinct though subject communities” (Freeman).

Ἴνησσαν —identical with Aetna, not far from Catana. It had been an important Sicel stronghold.

Καϊκῖνον —unknown. Take κατὰ τὸν Κ. with ἐκράτησαν.
