L’hiver suivant, les Athéniens envoyèrent autour du Péloponèse vingt vaisseaux sous les ordres de Phormion, qui alla se poster à Naupacte, afin de fermer le golfe de Grisa aux bâtiments de Corinthe. Six autres vaisseaux, commandés par Mélésandros, furent détachés vers la Carie et la Lycie; ils devaient lever les contributions dans ces contrées et s’opposer à ce que les pirates péloponésiens partissent de là pour entraver la navigation des bâtiments marchands venant de Phasélis, de Phénicie et de toute cette partie du continent¹. Mélésandros pénétra en Lycie avec les Athéniens qu’il tira de ses vaisseaux et qu’il renforça d’un certain nombre d’alliés; mais il fut vaincu dans une rencontre et périt avec une partie des siens.

[1] In the beginning of the winter the Athenians sent twenty galleys about Peloponnesus under the command of Phormio, who, coming to lie at Naupactus, guarded the passage that none might go in or out from Corinth and the Crisaean gulf. And other six galleys under the conduct of Melesander they sent into Caria and Lycia, as well to gather tribute in those parts as also to hinder the Peloponnesian pirates lying on those coasts from molesting the navigation of such merchant ships as they expected to come to them from Phaselis, Phoenicia, and that part of the continent.

[2] But Melesander, landing in Lycia with such forces of the Athenians and their confederates as he had aboard, was overcome in battle and slain with the loss of a part of his army.

All’entrare dell’ inverno gli Ateniesi spedirono venti navi intorno al Peloponneso con Formione ammiraglio , il quale, facendo massa in Naupatto , stava a riguardo che nessuna nave entrasse od uscisse da Corinto e dal seno criseo. Melesandro avanzatosi nella Licia colle genti ateniesi ed alleale che erano sulle navi, vinto in battaglia, e perduta una parte dell' esercito, vi rimase ucciso.
