Notes on the current edition

History

1. Valentinian.
2. Belonging to the paedagogium; see xxvi. 6, 15, note.
3. For species, cf. xiv. 9, 7.
4. Cf. xxiii. 1, 4.
5. The sentence is corrupt. The earlier editors inserted words from the Chronicle of Hieronymus of 372, meaning was executed because he had concealed Octavianus . . . who had taken refuge at his house.
6. A strator was appointed in the provinces to buy choice horses. Another class of stratores were grooms; see Index of Officials, Vol. I.
7. On elogium see also xiv. 5, 5, note.
8. I.e., use magic arts.
9. A lacuna follows, see crit. note 1.
10. Since de fustibus caesi seems to be an impossible construction, there was probably a lacuna between de and fustibus; see crit. note 2.
