2. Pliny (Nat. Hist., xxix. 72) tells of snakes kept as pets in Rome. The snake was, in fact, regarded as the symbol of the genius of the owner of a house, and is often found at Pompeii painted on the wall of the shrine of the household-gods along with the figures of the Lares and Penates.
