12. These five words occur in the MSS after discederem at the beginning of the chapter. Their transposition here (suggested by van der Vliet) seems necessary.

14. The MSS have actenus, which was naturally read hactenus by the old editors. Ac tandem is Helm's emendation, which gives much better sense—hactenus, indeed, is almost the opposite of what is required.
