τοὺς Αἰγυπτίους πολλοὶ παλαιοτάτους εἶναί φασιν, Ἡρόδοτος (II 2) δὲ Φρύγας. Μύσημης δὲ ἐν α' Αἰγυπτιακῶν (M. IV 369) καὶ Λέων ἐν α' τῶν Πρὸς τὴν μητέρα (fg 1 M. II 331) καὶ Κνωσσὸς ἐν α' Γεωγραφικῶν τῆς Ἀσίας (M. III 158) πάντων ἀρχαιοτάτους Αἰγυπτίους εἶναί φασιν.
c. Not yet of the Danaans: many say that the Egyptians are the most ancient, but Herodotus (II 2) says the Phrygians. Mysemes in the first book of his Aegyptiaca (M. IV 369) and Leon in the first book of his work Against his Mother (fr. 1 M. II 331) and Cnossus in the first book of his Geography of Asia (M. III 158) say that the Egyptians are the most ancient of all.
δοκεῖ δὲ πρῶτον Θήβην κατ’ Αἴγυπτον κτισθῆναι, ὡς φησι Ξεναγόρας ἐν α' Χρόνων (240 fg 1 J.). καὶ Νικάνωρ δὲ λέγει ἐν ταῖς Μετονομασίαις (fg 15 M. III 634) ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ πρώτην κτισθῆναι πόλιν Θήβας, καὶ αὐτὸς συμφωνῶν τῷ Ἀρχεμάχῳ (fg 6 M. IV 315).
It seems that Thebes in Egypt was founded first, as Xenagoras says in Book 1 of his Chronicles (240 FGrH 1 J.). And Nicanor also says in his Renamings (FGrH 15 M. III 634) that the city of Thebes was founded first in Egypt, himself agreeing with Archemachus (FGrH 6 M. IV 315).
Ἵππυς (fg 1 M. II 13) δὲ τοὺς Αἰγυπτίους πρώτους 〈γεγενῆσθαι〉 στοχάζεται 〈ἐκ〉 τῆς τοῦ ἀέρος κράσεως καὶ 〈ἐκ τοῦ〉 γονιμώτατον εἶναι τὸ τοῦ Νείλου ὕδωρ. γεγονέναι δὲ αὐτούς φησιν ὁ Ἀπολλώνιος πρὸ τοῦ πάντα τὰ ἄστρα φανῆναι· καθὸ τήν τε φύσιν κατανοῆσαι αὐτῶν δοκοῦσι καὶ τὰ ὀνόματα θεῖναι, 〈καὶ〉 τὰ μὲν ιβ' ζῴδια θεοὺς βουλαίους προσηγόρευον, τοὺς δὲ πλάνητας ῥαβδοφόρους.
Hippys (FGrH 1 M. II 13) conjectures that the Egyptians were the first to come into being from the temperament of the air and from the fact that the water of the Nile is most productive. Apollonius says that they existed before all the stars appeared; for which reason they are thought to have observed their nature and given them names, and they called the twelve zodiac signs "counselor gods," and the planets "rod-bearers."

Herodotus (loc. cit.) says that the Phrygians were the first to come into being. Later Psammetichus, king of the Egyptians, wishing to determine who were the earth-born, handed over two infants to a shepherd, ordering that no one speak, but only that a goat's teat be given to them.
