Notes on the current edition

Scholia on Book 1 of Apollonius' Argonautica

1. 5 Et. Gen. (B Voss.) δὲ ὁ γ. hic in Et. M., ὁ γ. post Ἀπολλώνιος in B, om. Voss.). cf. W 80 Hesych. ἀ. (46, 5 Ba. Phot. Suid.) Eust. 911, 51
2. 5 Etymologicum Genuinum (B, Voss.) ἄκαινα: the rod. Apollonius III 1323. It is a Thessalian rod, the so-called ox-goad. It was named thus: The Nile, the river of the Egyptians, rising and swelling during the summer, loosening the boundaries of the land of the Egyptians with its moisture and mixing them up, destroyed them (Et. M., ἀπώλυμεν in B, ἀπόλλομεν in Voss.). But when it diminished and again (B, πάλιν καὶ in Voss.) subsided, such fighting and dispute arose among the Egyptians (B, τῶν -ων in Voss.) over boundaries that they even killed one another. Later, taking a rod, they measured their own lands before (Voss., περὶ in B) the rising of the river and marked them, and again after the subsiding of the river, measuring with the same rod, each received his own land without fighting and slaughter. Therefore that rod, by which they measured, was called ἄκαινα, which deprived them of killing one another, that is, murdering. It is said that a certain Thessalian, being in Egypt, devised measuring the land with the rod. Hence he also said 'Pelasgian' instead of 'Thessalian'. And ἐργατίνης is the farmer (ἐργ. δὲ ὁ γ. here in Et. M., ὁ γ. after Ἀπολλώνιος in B, omitted in Voss.). cf. W 80 Hesych. ἀ. (46, 5 Ba. Phot. Suid.) Eust. 911, 51
3. 16 1342. Et. Gen. (B) ἐργατίναι: οἱ γηπόνοι. οἷον III 1340—1342.
4. 16 1342. Etymologicum Genuinum (B) ἐργατίναι: the tillers of the soil. As in III 1340–1342.
