1. 20 Et. Gen. (CD) Ἀβαρνίδα: οἷον I 932. Et. M., om. Et. M.) τοῦ στοιχείου Ἀβαρνίδα. cf. Reitzenstein Gesch. d. griech. Etym. 1897, 318; W 96. Et. Gen. τοῦτο δὲ Σοφοκλῆς ὑπομνηματίζων ἱστορεῖ τὴν Ἀφροδίτην ἄμορφον ἐν Λαμψάκῳ τεκοῦσαν τὸν Πρίαπον ἀπαρνήσασθαι καὶ τὴν χώραν Ἀπαρνίδα καλέσαι, ἣ κατὰ παραφθορὰν καὶ Ἀβαρνὶς καλεῖται. cf. 2. 20 Etymologicum Genuinum (CD) Ἀβαρνίδα: as at I 932. Percote is a city of Troy, and Abarnis is a city of Lampsacus. It was named from the following cause. Aphrodite fell in love with Dionysus and had intercourse with him. When he departed for Media (India Reitz.), she married Adonis. When Dionysus returned, she made a garland and went to meet him, but she was ashamed to follow him because she was married, and she withdrew to Lampsacus and wished to destroy (give birth to Reitz.) the child she was carrying by him. But Hera, out of jealousy, touched her belly with a bewitched hand and made her give birth to a child, whom they say was named Priapus, ugly and with large genitals; and Aphrodite denied him, and from this the place was called Aparnis, and by a change of letter Abarnis. cf. Reitzenstein Gesch. d. griech. Etym. 1897, 318; W 96. Etymologicum Genuinum (A) Περκώτη: it is a city of Troy, and Περκώσιος is the citizen. cf. Reitzenstein l. l. 325. Stephanus of Byzantium Ἀβαρνος: ... Apollonius I 932–933 (ἠιόνα). Sophocles, in his commentary, relates that Aphrodite, having given birth to the misshapen Priapus in Lampsacus, denied him and called the region Aparnis, which by corruption is also called Abarnis. cf.
