Notes on the current edition

Dionysiaca

1. The MSS. Read τανυρρήνοιο, edd variously τανυρρίνοιο, ταλαυρίνοιο, τανυκραίροιο. The stem τανυ- suggests that the poet meant horns.
2. So MSS.: edd. θεσμὸν, ῥυθμὸν, μῦθον.
3. A line seems to have been omitted.
4. Marcellus would read μάρμαρον, understanding the topaz: not a wise reading, because the topaz, really chrysolite, was dug out of Zeboiget Island, not from the sea itself ( Enc. Brit. s.v. Peridot).
5. A verse or more seems to have fallen out.
6. So Mss.: some conjecture θεσμῷ.
7. χυτῇ has no clear meaning here. H. J. Rose suggests to transpose χυτῇ πεπτηῶτα and place them between κωκύουσα and νέκυν in 549.
