Civil Wars

1. νεῦρα πολέμου: sinews of war. This phrase is older than Appian. It occurs in Cicero’s Philippic, v. 2, nervos belli, pecuniam infinitam.
2. This is the only place in Appian where we find the phrase Italic drachmas. What is meant is the Roman denarius, equal to sixteen American cents.
3. Both Doriscus and Mount Serrium are mentioned in Pliny’s Natural History (iv. 18).
