Notes on the current edition

Mithridatic Wars

1. Y.R. 692
2. B.C. 62
3. Pompey was born in the year 106 B.C. Consequently he was now in his 45th year.
4. In all the codices Sec. 118 and 119 are placed at the beginning of the Mithridatic wars. Schweighäuser transferred them to this place.
5. Y.R. 707
6. B.C. 47
7. The text says, ἐς τὸν Πόντον, to the Euxine, but Pharnaces, being at Sinope, was already at the Euxine. So Schweighäuser suggests ἐς τὸν Βοσπόρον.
8. This is an anachronism. The title of Great was bestowed upon Pompey by Sulla, in consequence of Pompey’s victory over the Marian faction in Africa, in the year 81 B.C. (Plutarch, Life of Pompey, 13).
