In §§ 152–156 the Pythagorean doctrine of numbers as the primary constituents, or ‟elements,” of the Universe is expounded; in §§ 156–157 the Pythagorean proof that numbers are distinct from things numbered (‟numerables”) is set forth; in §§ 158 ff. the Sceptical arguments against the Pythagorean doctrine of the real existence of numbers (as distinct from ‟numerables”) are developed.
