[1] The land between Elis and Sikyonia, reaching down to the eastern sea, is now called Achaea after the inhabitants, but of old was called Aigialeus and those who lived in it Aegialians. According to the Sikyonians the name is derived from Aigialeus, who was king in what is now Sikyonia; others say that it is from the land, the greater part of which is coast (
aigialos).
