polis] of the Lacedaemonians [Spartans] was once shaken by an earthquake sent by the god [
theos], and the Helots seceded to Ithome.

After the secession the Spartans [Lacedaemonians] sent for help to various places, including Athens, and the Athenians dispatched specially-chosen troops under the command of Kimon, the son of Miltiades. These the Spartans [Lacedaemonians] dismissed, because they suspected them.
