Notes on the current edition

Geography

1. The Athenian general.
2. Only this fragment (Bergk.) of Alcaeus’ poem, addressed to Melanippus (see Hdt. 5.95 ), is preserved. But the text has been so badly mutilated by the copyists that none of the conjectural restorations can with certainty be adopted; and hence the translator can give only the general sense of the passage. However, the whole reference to Alcaeus appears to be merely a note that has crept into the text from the margin (Meineke and Leaf omit the whole passage).
