1. ¹ i.e. and so this kind of wood at least is replaced by fresh growth. ² Plin. 16. 57.
2. 3 τῆς ἐπιρροῆς γινομένης ἐνδᾳδοῦσθαι conj. W.; τὴν ἐπιρροὴν γινομένην ἔνδᾳδον Ald.; τῆς ἐπιρροῆς γινομένης ἔνδᾳδον γίνεσθαι conj. Sch.
3. ¹ ἐδαφίσωσι: cf. 9. 4. 4.
4. ² cf. 5 9, where however the ‘pit’ is not described.
5. ³ γίνεσθι δὲ. Something seems to have dropped out at the beginning of this clause. ? “ and they say that the pile at largest is 180”. . . .: so Sch. supplying μεγίστη after ᾖ. The omitted words might also throw light on the preceding sentence.
