Enquiry into Plants

1. ¹ i. e. to fix the date of the beginning and end of the cycle of the plant’s life.
2. 2 αὐτοῦ τούτου: ? the plant itself. αὐτοῦ τοῦ ἔτους conj. Sch.
3. 3 i. e. according as the seed ripened last year or this year. In this rather obscure section I follow W. ’s explanations.
4. 4 Plin. 21. 100.
5. ¹ i.e. spicate.
6. ² σκανδικώδη: i.e. umbellate. One would expect κιχοριώδη. to correspond with § 3; but the three classes mentioned seem to be merely ‘samples’ of classification: of the three only one (τὰ σταχυώδη) is described below, and other classes are added.
7. 3 μονοφυῆ I conj.: i.e. those which have a scape: cf. 2. 6. 9; C.P. 1. 1. 3. μυόφαα U; μυοφῶα MAld.; om. G.
8. ¹ ἐλάττους conj. Scal.; θάττους UMAld.
9. ² Plin. 21. 88. ³ τὸ conj. Sch.; τὴν Ald.
10. 4 Meaning not obvious; σκληροῦ is perhaps corrupt.
11. 5 ὑποχοιρὶς conj. Scal.; ὑποχώρησις UMAld. cf. 7. 7. 1 n.
12. 6 οὐχ ὥσπερ: an adjective has perhaps dropped out between these words; ? πικρὰ (amara Plin. l.c.).
