1. ¹ This passage was misunderstood by Plin. 13. 19. The sense seems to be that the viscous character of oil, though preservative of perfume, is not easily receptive of it.

3. ¹ τὸ conj. Sch.; τι Vulg.W. Sh. also adds ἀμυγδάλων after πικρῶν.
4. 2 i.e. those derived from the Egyptian balanos and bitter almonds.
5. ¹ I have bracketed καὶ.
6. 2—2 This passage is omitted, apparently by accident, in both W.’s texts, though represented in his Latin version. I
