[The parts of Tragedy which must be treated as elements
of the whole have been already mentioned.
We now come to the quantitative parts—the separate parts
into which Tragedy is divided namely, Prologue, Episode,
Exode, Choric song;
this last being divided into Parode and Stasimon.
These are common to all plays: peculiar to some are the
songs of actors from the stage and the Commoi.
The Prologue is that entire part of a tragedy which
precedes the Parode of the Chorus.
The Episode is that entire part of a tragedy which is
between complete choric songs.
The Exode is that entire part of a tragedy which has no
choric song after it.
Of the Choric part the Parode is the first undivided
utterance of the Chorus:
the Stasimon is a Choric ode without anapaests or
trochaic tetrameters:
the Commos is a joint lamentation of Chorus and actors.
The parts of Tragedy which must be treated as elements
of the whole have been already mentioned. The quantitative
parts—the separate parts into which it is divided are here
enumerated.]
Aristotle on the Art of Poetry (Ingram Bywater, 1909) (OCR draft) Experimental (Ingram Bywater's English translation of Aristotle's Poetics, published in 1909.) — 12 focus
The parts of Tragedy to be treated as formative elements in
the whole were mentioned in a previous Chapter.
From the
point of view, however, of its quantity, i. e. the separate
sections into which it is divided, a tragedy has the following
parts: Prologue, Episode, Exode,
tinguished into Parode and Stasimon;
these two are common
to all tragedies, whereas songs from the stage and Commoe
are only found in some.
The Prologue is all that precedes
the Parode of the chorus;
an Episode all that comes in
between two whole choral songs;
the Exode all that follows
after the last choral song.
In the choral portion the Parode
is the whole first statement of the chorus;
a Stasimon,
a song of the chorus without anapaests or trochees;
a
Commos, a lamentation sung by chorus and actor in concert.
The parts of Tragedy to be used as formative elements in
the whole we have already mentioned; the above are its
parts from the point of view of its quantity, or the separate
sections into which it is divided.

CHAPITRE DOUZIEME.
1.
Poetica d'Aristotile (Bernardo Segni, 1549) (OCR draft) Experimental (Bernardo Segni's 1549 Florentine Italian translation, aligned to the Kassel reference passage sequence.) — 12 focus
