LE ſujet doit être un, & non pas, comme pluſieurs penſent, tiré d'une ſeule perſonne. Car, comme on voit tous les jours une infinité d'accidens de la plupart deſquels on ne peut rien faire qui ſoit un, il arrive de même que les actions d'un même homme, ſont en ſi grand nombre & ſi differentes entre elles, qu'on ne ſçauroit jamais les reduire à cette Unité, & en faire une ſeule & même action.

A fable is not one, as some conceive it to be, merely because the hero of it is one. For numberless events happen to one man, many of which are such as cannot be connected into one event: and so, likewise, there are many actions of one man which cannot be connected into any one action.
