Ceux qui joüoient alors étoient des Acteurs libres & volontaires, qui joüoient pour eux, & ſans ordre du Magiſtrat.

The successive improvements of Tragedy, and the respective authors of them, have not escaped our knowledge; but those of Comedy, from the little attention that was paid to it in its origin, remain in obscurity. but it is different with regard to comedy, from its being less cultivated at first. For it was not till late that the comic chorus was appointed by the magistrate but it was performed by voluntary actors, till at length, having attained certain forms peculiar to itself, the writers of comedy were deemed worthy of remembrance.

but [those of] comedy have escaped our knowledge, because it was not at first an object of attention. For it was late before the magistrate gave a chorus to comedians 1; but prior to that period, the choruses were voluntary.
