Poetics (W. H. Fyfe) (OCR draft) Perseus (William Hamilton Fyfe's English translation of Aristotle's Poetics, Loeb Classical Library, 1939 printing.) — 11 focus

A reversal is a change of the situation into the opposite, as described above,¹ this change being, moreover, as we are saying, probable or inevitable—

like the man in the Oedipus who came to cheer Oedipus and rid him of his anxiety about his mother by revealing his parentage and changed the whole situation.²

In the Lynceus, too, there is the man led off to execution and Danaus following to kill him, and the result of what had already happened was that the latter was killed and the former escaped.³

A discovery, as the term itself implies, is a change from ignorance to knowledge, producing either friendship or hatred in those who are destined for good fortune or ill.

A discovery is most effective when it coincides with reversals, such as that involved by the discovery in the Oedipus.

There are also other forms of discovery, for what we have described may in a sense occur in relation to inanimate and trivial objects, or one may discover whether some one has done something or not.

But the discovery which is most essentially part of the plot and part of the action is of the kind described above, for such a discovery and reversal of fortune will involve either pity or fear, 1452b 1 and it is actions such as these which, according to our hypothesis, tragedy represents; and, moreover, misfortune and good fortune are likely to turn upon such incidents.

Now since the discovery is somebody’s discovery, in some scenes one character only is discovered to another, the identity of the other being obvious; but sometimes each must discover the other. Thus Iphigeneia was discovered to Orestes through the sending of the letter, but a separate discovery was needed to make him known to Iphigeneia.⁴

We see then that two elements of the plot, reversal and discovery, turn upon these incidents. A third element is a calamity. Of these three elements we have already described reversal and discovery.

A calamity is a destructive or painful occurrence, such as a death on the stage, acute suffering and wounding and so on.

Poetics (S. H. Butcher, 1911) (OCR draft) Experimental (S. H. Butcher's English translation from Aristotle's Theory of Poetry and Fine Art, fourth edition, 1911.) — 11 focus

Reversal of the Situation is a change by which the action
veers round to its opposite, subject always to our rule of
probability or necessity.

Thus in the Oedipus, the messenger comes to cheer
Oedipus and free him from his alarms about his mother,
but by revealing who he is, he produces the opposite effect.

Again in the Lynceus, Lynceus is being led away to
his death, and Danaus goes with him, meaning to slay him;
but the outcome of the preceding incidents is that Danaus
is killed and Lynceus saved.

Recognition, as the name indicates, is a change from
ignorance to knowledge, producing love or hate between
the persons destined by the poet for good or bad fortune.

The best form of recognition is coincident with a Reversal
of the Situation, as in the Oedipus.

There are indeed other forms. Even inanimate things
of the most trivial kind may in a sense be objects of
recognition.
Again, we may recognise or discover whether a person has
done a thing or not.

But the recognition which is most intimately connected
with the plot and action is, as we have said, the recognition
of persons.
This recognition, combined with Reversal, will produce
either pity or fear; and actions producing these effects are
those which, by our definition, Tragedy represents.

Recognition, then, being between persons, it may happen
that one person only is recognised by the other—when the
latter is already known—or it may be necessary that the
recognition should be on both sides.
Thus Iphigenia is revealed to Orestes by the sending of
the letter; but another act of recognition is required to
make Orestes known to Iphigenia.

Two parts, then, of the Plot—Reversal of the Situation
and Recognition—turn upon surprises.

A third part is the Scene of Suffering. The Scene of
Suffering is a destructive or painful action, such as death
on the stage, bodily agony, wounds and the like.

Aristotle on the Art of Poetry (Ingram Bywater, 1909) (OCR draft) Experimental (Ingram Bywater's English translation of Aristotle's Poetics, published in 1909.) — 11 focus

A Peripety is the change from one state of things within
the play to its opposite of the kind described, and that too
in the way we are saying, in the probable or necessary
sequence of events;

as it is for instance in Oedipus: here
the opposite state of things is produced by the Messenger,
who, coming to gladden Oedipus and to remove his fears
as to his mother, reveals the secret of his birth.

And in
Lynceus: just as he is being led off for execution, with
Danaus at his side to put him to death, the incidents pre-
ceding this bring it about that he is saved and Danaus put
to death.

A Discovery is, as the very word implies, a change
from ignorance to knowledge, and thus to either love or hate,
in the personages marked for good or evil fortune.

The
finest form of Discovery is one attended by Peripeties, like
that which goes with the Discovery in Oedipus.

There are
no doubt other forms of it; what we have said may happen
in a way in reference to inanimate things, even things of
a very casual kind; and it is also possible to discover
whether some one has done or not done something.

But
the form most directly connected with the Plot and the
action of the piece is the first-mentioned. This, with a
Peripety, will arouse either pity or fear—actions of that
nature being what Tragedy is assumed to represent;
and it
will also serve to bring about the happy or unhappy
ending.

The Discovery, then, being of persons, it may be that of one
party only to the other, the latter being already known;
or
both the parties may have to discover themselves. Iphigenia,
for instance, was discovered to Orestes by sending the
letter; and another Discovery was required to reveal him
to Iphigenia.

Two parts of the Plot, then, Peripety and Discovery, are
on matters of this sort.
A third part is Suffering;

which
we may define as an action of a destructive or painful
nature, such as murders on the stage, tortures, woundings,
and the like.

Anagnorisis autem, sicut et nomen significat, ex ignorantia in notitiam transmutatio aut in amicitiam aut inimicitiam eorum que ad eufortunium aut infortunium determinata ;

pulcherrima autem anagnorisis, quando simul peripetie fiunt, sicut habet que in Oidipode.

Sunt quidem igitur et alia anagnorisees, et enim ad inanimata et ad quecumque adhuc et sicut dictum est accidit, et si egit quis et si non egit est anagnorizare ;

Aristotle has already laid it down in 10, 1452 a 18-20 that the Discovery should arise ἐξ αὐτῆς τῆς συστάσεως τοῦ μύθου, and he does not repeat his rule in the present chapter. He assumes that in a 37 ( ἡ μάλιστα τοῦ μύθου), and also later on, in chap. 16, which is a sort of appendix to this discussion (see esp. 16, 1455 a 16 ).

THE DISCOVERY, AS THE NAME IMPLIES, IS A TRANSITION FROM IGNORANCE TO KNOWLEDGE.

THIS species of dramatic incident, [A] which, like the foregoing, and for the fame reason, is, among us, confined to tragedy with a happy [A] For further observations on the discovery, see note IV, chap. XIV, and notes on chap. XVI. paffim. catastrophe =

catastrophe and comedy, was a great favorite with our earlier writers, but is seldom used by modern poets; probably from the difficulty of continuing the disguise with probability as to the other persons of the drama; or in regard to the audience, without keeping a principal character, (for of such only can an interesting discovery confift,) too long in obscurity, and facrificing too much to a single surprising situation, which will lofe much of its effect after the first representation. Can any thing be more absolutely improbable than that a daughter should be disguised from her father, and a woman from her lover, by being in men's cloaths? [B] and yet this is the case of Rofalind in As You Like It, where, from Orlando's fictitious courtship of Rofalind, though in difguise, and from the likeness being observed, both by him [c] and the duke, the improbability is still rendered more striking. As to the disguising the principal character from the audience, it appears a useless refinement, and was seldom practised by the ancients. In Shakespear also, Rosalind, Imogen, Viola, Julia, the Duke in [B] There must have been a peculiar improbability attending this kind of disguise, on which fo many of the plays of Shakespear, and Beaumont and Fletcher turn, from all the female characters being performed by men, an offence against probability when in a female habit; but for a man, in his own cloaths, to act a beautiful princess (Imogen, for instance) is perfectly inconsistent with the least shadow of it. See note Iv.. chap. XIII. [C] DUKE SEN. ' I do remember in this shepherd boy • Some lively touches of my daughter's favour. ORLA. • My lord, the first time that I ever saw him, ، Methought he was a brother to your daughter.. • But, my good lord, this boy is foreft born.' Meafure

POETIC OF ARISTOTLE. Measure for Measure, are all known to the spectators. Massei and Voltaire have chosen to conceal Eghistus from the theatre, as well as from his mother, in Merope; but in this they have not only deviated from the tragedy of Euripides [D] but destroyed the striking effect described by Plutarch, which was plainly derived from their relation to each other being known to the spectators. One of the best instances I know, of a principal character being concealed to the audience through the whole of the action, and yet taking his proper share in it, is in the Bondman of Maffinger. There is a very good instance of it also in the comedy of Seduction, by Mr. Holcroft.
