Yet, O my father, hadſt thou greatly fallen
Beneath the walls of Troy, pierc’d by the ſpear
Of ſome bold Lycian, leaving to thy house

Thy glory, gracing with illustrious ſplendor
Thy children’s ſteps, on that barbaric coaſt
The high-rais’d tomb had dignify’d thy duſt,

That fell with honour there, had held its ſſtate
Majestic and rever’d, a king, next those
Whose aweful pow’r those darkſome realms obey.

Ah my father! hadst thou lain
Under Ilion's wall,
410
By some Lycian spearman slain,
Thou hadst left in this thine hall
Honour; thou hadst wrought for us
Fame and life most glorious.
Over-seas if thou had'st died,
415
Heavily had stood thy tomb,
Heaped on high; but, quenched in pride,
Grief were light unto thy home.

Daß du vor Troja doch
Starbst, o Vater, hinweggerafft
Vom Wurfspeer eines Troerjünglings!
350
Du ließest Ruhm deinem Haus zum Erbtheil,
Und bautest dem Pfade
Der Kinder neidwerthes Glück auf,
Und es prangte dein Grabmal
Hoch drüben am Meer in Troas,
355
Tröstend daheim die Deinen!
Zweite Gegenstrophe.

Cho. El. Kor. Or. Cho, El. Kor. Or. Cho. El. Kor. Or. Cho. El.
