The Libation Bearers (OCR draft) Experimental (The Libation Bearers. Theodore Alois Buckley, 1849.) — 585 focus
Full many 3 a dread and grievous horror does the earth nurture, and the arms of the deep teem with monsters hostile to mortals! and there spring forth in mid-air lights 4 hung aloft. Both the creatures that fly and those that crawl, and the gusty rage of hurricanes, one might be able to describe.
But who can tell the mighty daring spirit of man, and of women hardened in their souls, and their loves that venture all, comates with the woes of mortals? Un-lovely love, lording it in woman's heart, overcomes the conjugal societies of brutes and of men.
Let whosoever is not flighty in his thoughts know this, when he hath learned what a kindling device the wretched daughter of Thestius, who worked the destruction of her son, sought out, when she committed to the flames the glowing brand that was his coeval, from the time when he uttered his first cry on coming from the womb, and commensurate through his life unto the day foredoomed by Fate.
Another is there in legends whom we are bound to abhor, the murderess Scylla, who at the foeman's instigation destroyed a man [she should have] loved, having been seduced by Cretan necklaces of wrought gold, the gifts of Minos, what time she, shameless, robbed Nisus of his undying ringlet as he was breathing unsuspectingly in sleep; but Mercury 1 overtakes her.
And since I have made mention of savage horrors, though unseasonably 2 , [one may also mention] the odious match, execrated by the house, and plots laid by a woman's mind against an armed warrior, against a warrior for his majesty bitter to his enemies; and I honour the hearth of a household that knows not audacity, and in women an undaring spirit.
Of horrors, indeed, that of Lemnos holds the first place in story; and it is deplored in every clime as an abomination, and a man is wont to compare what is dreadful to Lemnian sufferings 3 . And by reason of heaven-detested guilt the race of mortals perishes in infamy; for no one reveres that which is offensive to the gods. Which of these hideous facts do I unreasonably reckon up?
But the sword, sharp and bitter, inflicts a wound right through the lungs, driven by the hand of Justice. For the lawless conduct of him 4 that hath lawlessly trespassed against every awful attribute of Jupiter, is not trampled under foot on the ground.
But the base of Justice is planted firm; and Fate, that forges the sword, prepares it for the deed, and brings into the house a new offering of ancient murders, and time-honoured 5 Erinnys avenges the stain.

Pregnant with ills the dreary air
Gives ſickneſs, pain, and terror birth:
665
The ſeas, that wind around the earth,
Fatal to man their hideous monsters bear:
Each forest in its ſhaggy ſides,
That darkens o’er the perilous ground,
The lurking, rav’nous ſavage hides,
670
Whilſt fierce birds wheel the ſummits round:
And mark with what tempestuous rage
Black from the ſkies the ruſhing winds engage.
ANTISTROPHE I.
But who the dangerous thoughts can tell
That in man's daring bosom roll;
675
Or whirl the more tempestuous soul
Of woman, when the tyrant paſſions ſwell?
When love, to torment near allied,
Bids frenzy rule the troubled hour?
Love, that exerts with wanton pride
680
O'er female hearts deſpotic pow’r;
And binds in his ungentle chain
Each ſavage of the wood, each monſter of the main.
STROРНЕ 2.
Think with what ſullen frenzy fir'd

Cast on the hearth the fatal brand;
The flames confum’d it, and her ſon expir’d.

Againſt her father's life ſhe roſe,
Approach’d the ſleeping monarch’s bed,
And reſt the ſacred honours of his head.

In the black annals of far distant time
The Lesbian dames recorded stand u ;

And execrates the murders of their hand:
Baſely at once the husbands bleed;
Th' indignant Gods abhor the deed.
And ſhall man dare with impious voice t' approve

Thro' the gored breast
With rage impreſt
The ſword of justice hews the dreadful wound;
And haughty might

Like the vile duſt is trampled on the ground.
Righteous are thy decrees, eternal King,
And from the roots of justice ſpring:
Theſe ſhall ſtrike deep, and flourish wide,

Whilſt all, that ſcorn them, periſh in their pride.
Fate the portentous ſword prepares,
And the rough labours of the anvil ſhares;
Wide thro’ the house a tide of blood

Erinnys marks the destin’d hour,
Vengeful her meditated rage to pour.

mir stechende Wunde;
Gerechtigkeit fordr' ich. Wo bleibt sie?

vor Gottes Gesetzen sie schmählich
mit Füfsen treten dürfen

Many and marvellous the things of fear
Earth's breast doth bear;
And the sea's lap with many monsters teems,
680
And windy levin-bolts and meteor-gleams
Breed many deadly things—
Unknown and flying forms, with fear upon their wings,
And in their tread is death;
And rushing whirlwinds, of whose blasting breath
685
Man's tongue can tell.
But who can tell aright the fiercer thing,
The aweless soul, within man's breast inhabiting?
Who tell, how, passion-fraught and love-distraught,
The woman's eager, craving thought
690
Doth wed mankind to woe and ruin fell?
Yea, how the loveless love that doth possess
The woman, even as the lioness,
Doth rend and wrest apart, with eager strife,
The link of wedded life?
695
Let him be the witness, whose thought is not borne on light wings thro' the air,
But abideth with knowledge, what thing was wrought by 1 Althea's despair;
For she marr'd the life-grace of her son, with ill counsel rekindled the flame
That was quenched as it glowed on the brand, what time from his mother he came,
With the cry of a new-born child; and the brand from the burning she won,
700
For the Fates had foretold it coeval, in life and in death, with her son.
Yea, and man's hate tells of another, even Scylla 2 of murderous guile,
Who slew for an enemy's sake her father, won o'er by the wile
And the gifts of Cretan Minos, the gauds of the high-wrought gold;
For she clipped from her father's head the lock that should never wax old,
705
As he breathed in the silence of sleep, and knew not her craft and her crime—
But Hermes, the guard of the dead, doth grasp her, in fulness of time.
And since of the crimes of the cruel I tell, let my singing record
The bitter wedlock and loveless, the curse on these halls outpoured,
The crafty device of a woman, whereby did a chieftain fall,
710
A warrior stern in his wrath, the fear of his enemies all,—
A song of dishonour, untimely! and cold is the hearth that was warm,
And ruled by the cowardly spear, the woman's unwomanly arm.
But the summit and crown of all crimes is that which in Lemnos befel; 3
A woe and a mourning it is, a shame and a spitting to tell;
715
And he that in after time doth speak of his deadliest thought,
Doth say It is like to the deed that of old time in Lemnos was wrought;
And loathed of men were the doers, and perished, they and their seed,
For the gods brought hate upon them; none loveth the impious deed.
It is well of these tales to tell; for the sword in the grasp of Right
720
With a cleaving, piercing blow to the innermost heart doth smite,
And the deed unlawfully done is not trodden down nor forgot,
When the sinner out-steppeth the law and heedeth the high God not;
But Justice hath planted the anvil, and Destiny forgeth the sword
That shall smite in her chosen time; by her is the child restored;
725
And darkly devising, the Fiend of the house, world-cursed, will repay
The price of the blood of the slain, that was shed in the bygone day.

Erde nährt wunderbar
Grause Schrecken ohne Zahl;
Tief-in Meers düsterm Schooß wimmelt manch
Graunvoll Ungeheuer,
Der Menschen Feind; zwischen Erd' und Himmel hoch
590
Sproßt der Blige flammend Licht;
Flattert, eitler Art,
Wie dort Thestios'
Arge Tochter, wie die Kindsmörderin
605
Tückevoll den Brand ersonnen!
In Glut warf sie todschnaubend des Sohnes
Lebensfackel, die, seit er bang
Ihrem Schooß sich entwunden,
Ihn durch's Leben geleitete
610
Bis zum Tage des Schicksals.
Zweite Gegenstrophe.
Auch dein werde stets in Haß gedacht,
Blut'ge Skylla, dein,
Die, dem Feind zulieb,
Einem Freunde gab den Tod, angelockt
615
Durch das goldne Kreterhalsband,
Durch Minos' Brautgabe gefangen.
Als er sorglos athmet' im Schlaf,
Schnitt die Freche dem Nisos
Sein unsterbliches Haar vom Haupt:
620
Rächend findet sie Hermes.
Dritte Strophe.
Dritte Gegenstrophe.
Vor allen Unthaten ragt im Lied hervor,
630
Was Lemnos' Frau'n übten, was, weithin beklagt,
635
Denn Keiner mag ehren, was ein Gott verwarf.
Gerecht, wahrhaftig sprach mein Mund hier.
Vierte Strophe.
Das Schwert, gezückt auf Frevlerbrust,
Es stürmt grad' ein bitterscharf, und mordet
Durch Dike's Hand. In Staub hinab
640
Vierte Gegenstrophe.
Auf festem Grund ruht Dike's Stamm.
Das Richtbeil schärft ihr die Schmiedin Aesa;
Und alten Mordes Gräuelschuld
645

Notes on the current edition

Libation Bearers

1. Meteors.
2. When Meleager, the child of Althaea, who was daughter of Thestius, king of Aetolia , and wife to Oeneus of Calydon, was a week old, the Fates appeared to the mother and declared that he would die when the brand on the hearth was consumed. Whereupon Althaea took the brand and put it in a chest; but when Meleager, grown to youthful manhood, slew her brothers, she threw it into the fire, and her son died suddenly.
3. Nisus was besieged in his town of Megara by Minos, king of Crete . Nisus’ daughter Scylla, being in love with Minos, cut from the head of her father the purple hair on which his life depended, so that he was slain by the Cretans.
4. Hermes, the conductor to Hades of the souls of the dead.
5. The women of Lemnos , jealous of Thracian slaves, killed their husbands, so that when the Argonauts visited the island they found no men.
6. The translation is based on the reading παρεκβάντος (Stanley); but this and all other alterations do not remove the difficulties of the original.

Rob. et βοτῶν in Rob. In Etym. Μ. p. 120, 41. Apud Aeschylum scribendum esse απέρωπος putarunt etiam Pauwius, Heathius, Schutzius, Bothius. Sed praestat hic quidem απέρωτος, quamquam Lobeckius Paral. p. 259. nullum similis formae exemplum novit.
