Eteocles
Men of Cadmus’s city, he who guards from the stern the concerns of the State and guides its helm with eyes untouched by sleep must speak to the point. For if we succeed, the responsibility is heaven’s;
1
but if—may it not happen—disaster is our lot, Eteocles would be the one name shouted many times throughout the city in the citizens’ resounding uproars and laments. From these evils may Zeus the Defender, upholding his name, shield the city of the Cadmeans!
5
But now you—both he who is still short of his youthful prime, and he who, though past his prime, still strengthens the abundant growth of his body, and every man still in his prime, as is fitting—you must aid the State and
10
the altars of your homeland’s gods so that their honors may never be obliterated. You must aid, too, your children, and Mother Earth, your beloved nurse. For welcoming all the distress of your childhood, when you were young and crept upon her kind soil, she raised you to inhabit her and bear the shield,
15
and to prove yourselves faithful in this time of need. And so, until today, God has been favorably inclined, for though we have long been under siege, the war has gone well for the most part through the gods’ will. But now, as the seer, the herdsman of birds, informs us,
20
using his ears and his mind to understand with unerring skill the prophetic birds unaided by sacrificial fire—he, master of such prophecy, declares that the greatest
Argive
attack is being planned in night assembly and that they will make plans to capture our city.
25
Hurry each of you to the battlements and the gates of our towered walls! Rush with all your armor! Fill the parapets and take your positions on the platforms of the towers. Stand your ground bravely where the gates open out,
30
and do not be afraid of this crowd of foreigners. God will bring it to a good end.
I myself have dispatched scouts and men to observe their army, and I am confident that their going is not in vain. Once I have heard their report, I will not be taken by any trickery.
35
39
Enter a Scout.
I myself have dispatched scouts and men to observe their army, and I am confident that their going is not in vain. Once I have heard their report, I will not be taken by any trickery.
Scout
Eteocles, mighty prince of the Cadmeans,
I have returned with a sure report of the army outside the walls; I myself am an eyewitness of their actions. Seven warriors, fierce regiment-commanders, slaughtered a bull over a black shield, and then touching the bull’s gore with their hands they swore an oath
40
by Ares, by Enyo,
1
and by Rout who delights in blood, that either they will level the city and sack the Cadmeans’ town by force, or will in death smear this soil with their blood. And on Adrastus’ chariot they were placing remembrances of themselves
45
for their parents at home, and were shedding tears while so doing, but no piteous wailing escaped their lips. For their iron- hearted spirit heaved, blazing with courage, as of lions with war in their eyes. Your knowledge of these things was not delayed by fearfulness;
50
for I left them casting lots to decide how each commander, his post assigned by chance, would lead his regiment against the gates. Therefore, choose the bravest men of the city and station them quickly at the outlets of the gates. For nearby already the
Argive
army in full armor
55
is advancing in a flurry of dust, and glistening foam splatters the plain in drops from the horses’ pantings. So you, like the careful helmsman of a ship, secure the city before Ares’ blasts storm down upon it; for the wave of their army now crashes over the dry land.
60
Seize the first opportune moment for doing this. For all else, I, on my part, will keep a reliable eye on the lookout, and you, by learning from my certain report what happens beyond the gates, shall remain unharmed.
Exit.
65
Eteocles
O Zeus and Earth, and gods that guard our city,
and Curse,
2
potent agent of my father’s vengeance, do not destroy my city, ripping it up from its foundations, captive of the enemy, a city that speaks in
Greece
’s tongue, and do not destroy our hearths and homes.
70
May they never hold the free land and city of Cadmus beneath the yoke of slavery! Be our protection! I am certain that what I ask is in our common interest; for a State that prospers pays honors to its gods.
Exit Eteocles, with citizens. The Chorus enters in fearful agitation.
75
78
Chorus
In terror I wail loud cries of sorrow. Their army is let loose! Leaving camp,
—look!—the mounted throng floods swiftly ahead. The dust whirling in the air tells me this is so—its message is speechless, yet clear and true.
And now the plains of my native land under the blows of hooves send a roar to my ears; the sound flies
80
and rumbles like a resistless torrent crashing down a mountainside.
Ah, ah, you gods and goddesses, raise your war cry over our walls to drive away the onrushing evil!
The army of the white shield,
85
ready for battle, rushes at full speed against the city.
Who then will rescue us, which of the gods or goddesses will help?
Or shall I fall in supplication at the feet
90
of our ancestral gods’ statues?
Ah, blessed gods, firmly enthroned, the time has come to hold fast to your statues. Why do we delay, who are much to be lamented?
95
Do you hear the clash of shields, or does it escape you? When, if not now, shall we place sacred robes and wreaths on the statues to accompany our prayers?
I see the clash—it is not the clatter of a single spear. What will you do? Will you betray
100
your own land, Ares, where you have dwelt since long ago? God of the golden helmet, look, look upon the city that you once cherished!

But haste ye all, both to the battlements and the gates of the tower-works; On! in full panoply throng the breastworks, and take your stations on the platforms of the towers, and, making stand at the outlets of the gates, be of good heart, nor be over-dismayed at the rabble of the aliens; God will give a happy issue. Moreover, I have also despatched scouts and observers of the army, who will not, I feel assured, loiter on their way; and when I have had intelligence from these, I shall, in no point, be surprised by stratagem.

Shall hear his name alone wide thro' the city
Insulted by each tongue, that vents its spleen

From which may Jove, the guardian of our state,
Defend the sons of Cadmus!
But this hour
Calls on you all, whether your flow'ry spring

Guiltless of fire, from their oracular wings
Draws his deep skill, and warns us that the pow'rs

Advancing, meditate the dark assault.
Haste all then to the walls, haste to the bulwarks
With all your arms, fill ev'ry tow'r, secure

By these, not charg'd, I trust, in vain to watch,
Inform'd I guard against the wiles of war.

10
parole acconce deve dir: ché quando
ridon gli eventi ella è mercè dei Numi;
15
e con querele decantato Giove
-
che detto è salutar, salute arrechi
alla città di Cadmo. - Or tutti voi,

carissima nutrice. Essa, reggendo
dell'educarvi il peso tutto, pargoli
repenti ancora, sul benigno suolo
v'accolse e vi nutrí, ché cittadini
30
fidi e fidi guerrieri, a tai frangenti
un giorno foste. E insino ad oggi, il Nume
a favor nostro s'inchinò: la guerra,
mercè dei Numi, insino a qui, propizia
volse, gran parte, a noi stretti d'assedio.
35
Ed ora il vate educator d'augelli,
che, senza fiamma, con l'orecchio, intende
i fatidici alati, e col pensiero,
e con la non mendace arte: costui,
signor di tali vaticinî, annunzial
40
dunque tutti affrettatevi, lanciatevi
chiusi nell'arme, empiete i propugnacoli,
45
50
l'oste nemica e spero bene ch'essi
non indugin per via. Poscia che uditi
li avrò, veruna insidia potrà coglierni.
Il popolo si allontana. Dalla via che conduce fuor della rocca,
entra un messaggero.

ETEOCLES
BURGHERS of Cadmos, timely words beseem
Him at the stern who guards the city's weal,
Guiding the helm with lids unsoothed by sleep;
For, if we prosper, God alone is praised,
But if, which Heaven forefend, mischance befall,
One man, Eteocles, through all the town,
In noiseful rhymes and wailings manifold
Would by the folk be chanted; which may Zeus,
True to his sacred name, Averter, turn
From our Cadmeian city; you meanwhile
It now behoves—both him who faileth yet
Of youth's fair prime, and him whose bloom is past,
His body's vigour nursing to the full,
And each with service that befits him best—
The State to aid and shrines of native gods,
That ne'er their honours be erased; to aid
Your children too, and this your mother earth,
Beloved nurse, who, while your childish limbs
Crept on her friendly plain, all nurture-toil
Full kindly entertained, and fostered you
Her denizens to be, in strait like this
Shield-bearing champions, trusty in her cause.
And so far, to the present day, in sooth
God in our favour hath inclined the scale;
For unto us, so long beleaguered here,
War prospers in the main, through heaven's high will;—
But now, so speaks the seer, augur divine,
Without fire omens, but in ear and mind
Marking, with faultless skill, presageful birds,—
He, lord of these divining arts, declares
That the prime onset of the Achaian host,
Night-plotted, threatens even now the town;
Haste, to the turrets then and bastion-gates
Rush in full panoply;—the breastworks throng,
Take station on the platforms of the towers,
And, biding at the outlets of the ports,
Be of good courage, nor this alien swarm
Dread over-much; God will rule all for good.
Myself have scouts sent forth and army spies,
Who, as I trust, no bootless journey make;
And having heard their tidings, in no wise
Shall I by guileful stratagem be caught.

Clansmen of Cadmus, at the signal given
1
By time and season must the ruler speak
Who sets the course and steers the ship of State
With hand upon the tiller, and with eye
Watchful against the treachery of sleep.
5
For if all go aright,
thank Heaven, men say,
But if adversely—which may God forefend!—
One name on many lips, from street to street,
Would bear the bruit and rumour of the time,
Down with Eteocles!—a clamorous curse,
10
A dirge of ruin. May averting Zeus
Make good his title here, in Cadmus' hold!
You it beseems now—boys unripened yet
To lusty manhood, men gone past the prime
And increase of the full begetting seed,
15
And those whom youth and manhood well combined
Array for action—all to rise in aid
Of city, shrines, and altars of all powers
Who guard our land; that ne'er, to end of time,
Be blotted out the sacred service due
20
To our sweet mother-land and to her brood.
For she it was who to their guest-right called
Your waxing youth, was patient of the toil,
And cherished you on the land's gracious lap,
Alike to plant the hearth and bear the shield
25
In loyal service, for an hour like this.
Mark now! until to-day, luck rules our scale;
For we, though long beleaguered, in the main
Have with our sallies struck the foemen hard.
But now the seer, the feeder of the birds,
30
(Whose art unerring and prophetic skill
Of ear and mind divines their utterance
Without the lore of fire interpreted)
Foretelleth, by the mastery of his art,
That now an onset of Achaea's host
35
Is by a council of the night designed
To fall in double strength upon our walls.
Up and away, then, to the battlements,
The gates, the bulwarks! don your panoplies,
Array you at the breast-work, take your stand
40
On floorings of the towers, and with good heart
Stand firm for sudden sallies at the gates,
Nor hold too heinous a respect for hordes
Sent on you from afar: some god will guard!
I too, for shrewd espial of their camp,
45
Have sent forth scouts, and confidence is mine
They will not fail nor tremble at their task,
And, with their news, I fear no foeman's guile.

Ihr Kadmosbürger, reden muß das Treffende,
1
1
Denn sind wir glücklich, wissen wir's den Göttern Dank;
Pflegt eures Leibes, stählet ihn zu frischer That,
25
Der Vögel Schicksalsfluge lauscht voll weiser Kunst, -
Er, solcher Sprüche Meister, that uns heute kund,
30
Eilt alle, stürmt in voller Rüstung all' hinaus,
