May Jove, indeed, the god of suppliants benevolently regard our naval train having set sail from the mouths of the Nile with its fine sands. But having left the divine land bordering on Syria we fled, sentenced to no banishment by the vote of the city, on account of bloodshed, but abhorring the man-shunning and impious nuptials of the sons of Ægyptus our kindred. But our father Danaus both our prime counsellor and leader of our flight, arranging these things, determined on the best of two evils (viz., the nuptials, or flight,) that we should fly with all speed over the billow of the deep, and put to at the land of Argos, from whence, indeed, our lineage, from the heifer rendered frantic by the gadfly, and from the touch and inspiration of Jove, boasts to be derived. To what country therefore more friendly than this can we come with these wool-wreathed branches of suppliants in our hands? O 2
city, and land, and limpid water, and you heavenly gods, and you dire-punishing infernal deities possessing temples, and third [called upon] preserver Jove, receive this suppliant female train with a merciful spirit of the country: but the male-abounding insolent swarm, sprung from Ægyptus, before placing their foot in this marshy land, send thou into the deep with their swift ship, and there having met with a furious whirlwind, with thunder, lightning, and with the shower-bearing winds of the fell sea, let them perish, before at any time ascending our unwilling beds, from which Justice restrains them, having made their own 1
us here their kindred.

Qui confine au pays syrien, nous errons en bannies ; non qu'aucune cité ait porté contre nous la sentence d'exil qui paie le sang versé ;

PROTECTOR of the ſuppliant, gracious Jove,
1
Look with an eye of pity on this train,
Which from the gentle depths of Nile have ſped
Their naval enterprize.
Thoſe ſacred fields,
5
That border on the Syrian waſtes, we leave,
Not by the public voice of juſtice doom'd b
For blood, but willing fugitives from youths
Too near allied, whoſe impious love wou'd raiſe
Perforce the nuptial bed by us abhor'd;
10
Sons of Ægyptus they. Our father Danaus,
On whoſe authority we build our counſels,
And ſtrengthen our abhorrence, plan'd theſe measures,
And wrought us to this honorable toil,
To wing our ſwift flight o'er the billowy main,
15
And reach the ſhores of Argos c
, whence we draw
Our vaunted lineage, from th' embrace of Jove
Enamour'd of that virgin, whom transform'd
The tort'ring ſting drove wand'ring o'er the world.
To what more friendly region can we take
20
Our progreſs, bearing in our ſuppliant hands
Theſe peaceful branches crown'd with ſacred wreaths d
?
Ye royal tow'rs, thou earth, and ye fair ſtreams
Of orient chryſtal, ye immortal gods
In the high heav'ns enthrond, ye aweful pow'rs
25
That deep beneath hold your tremendous ſeats,
Jove the preſerver, guardian of the roof
Where dwells the pious man, receive your ſuppliants,
Breathe o'er these realms your favorable ſpirit,
And form them to receive this female train!
30
But for thoſe men, that proud injurious band
Sprung from Ægyptus, e'er they fix their foot
On this moiſt ſhore, drive them into the deep,
With all their flying ſtreamers and quick oars,
There let them meet the whirlwind's boiſterous rage,
35
Thund'rings, and light'nings, and the furious blaſts
That harrow up the wild tempeſtuous waves,
And periſh in the ſtorm, e'er they aſcend
Our kindred bed, and ſeize againſt our will
What nature and the laws of blood deny. e

Zeus! Lord and guard of suppliant hands!
1
Look down benign on us who crave
Thine aid—whom winds and waters drave
From where, through drifting shifting sands,
Pours Nilus to the wave.
5
From where the green land, god-possest,
Closes and fronts the Syrian waste,
We flee as exiles, yet unbanned
By murder's sentence from our land;
But—since Aegyptus had decreed
10
His sons should wed his brother's seed,—
Ourselves we tore from bonds abhorred,
From wedlock not of heart but hand,
Nor brooked to call a kinsman lord!
And Danaus, our sire and guide,
15
The king of counsel, pond'ring well
The dice of fortune as they fell,
Out of two griefs the kindlier chose,
And bade us fly, with him beside,
Heedless what winds or waves arose,
20
And o'er the wide sea waters haste,
Until to Argos' shore at last
Our wandering pinnace came—
Argos, the immemorial home
Of her from whom we boast to come—
25
Io, the ox-horned maiden, whom,
After long wandering, woe, and scathe,
Zeus with a touch, a mystic breath,
Made mother of our name.
Therefore, of all the lands of earth,
30
On this most gladly step we forth,
And in our hands aloft we bear—
Sole weapon for a suppliant's wear—
The olive-shoot, with wool enwound!
City, and land, and waters wan
35
Of Inachus, and gods most high,
And ye who, deep beneath the ground,
Bring vengeance weird on mortal man,
Powers of the grave, on you we cry!
And unto Zeus the Saviour, guard
40
Of mortals' holy purity!
Receive ye us—keep watch and ward
Above the suppliant maiden band!
Chaste be the heart of this your land
Towards the weak! but, ere the throng,
45
The wanton swarm, from Egypt sprung,
Leap forth upon the silted shore,
Thrust back their swift-rowed bark again,
Repel them, urge them to the main!
And there, 'mid storm and lightning's shine,
50
And scudding drift and thunder's roar,
Deep death be theirs, in stormy brine!
Before they foully grasp and win
Us, maiden-children of their kin,
And climb the couch by law denied,
55
And wrong each weak reluctant bride.

Auf unsere Schaar, die über das Meer
Von der Neilosflut feinsandigem Thor 3
Auszog! Wir entflohen der Heimat,
Dem geheiligten Land, das an Syria gränzt :
5
Doch nicht um Mord hat ein Bürgergericht
Mit verbannendem Stein uns verurtheilt;
Uns trieb Abscheu vor dem sündigen Bund
Mit den Vettern, dem Bund mit Aegyptos' Geschlecht,
In die Ferne hinaus. Und Danaos selbst,
10
Mein Vater, in Rath uns lenkend und That,
20
Mit dem bittenden Kranz,
Mit den wollumwundenen Zweigen?
O Stadt, o Land, o silberne Flut,
Ihr Götter der Höh'n und Götter der Nacht,
Ihr rächenden unter der Erde,
25
Und Erhalter Kronion, der das Geschlecht
Der Gerechten bewahrt, o empfanget der Frau'n
Schußflehende Schaar mit dem Hauche des Lands
Voll heiliger Scheu! Doch, naht trokvoll
Sich von Männern ein Schwarm aus Aegyptos' Geschlecht,
30
35
Vom Regen gepeitscht, ihn vernichte,
Eh die Frechen, Gewalt an den Töchtern des Ohms
Ausübend, das Bett, das Themis versagt,
Mit ringender Hand sich erobern.

3 Die
Parodos. Parodos zerfällt in drei Teile.
