ἐπίδοι wie 1. ἁγνή: die jungfräuliche Artemis ist am ersten berufen die Jungfrauen zu schützen. Vgl. 155. Hippolytos, der Wider- sacher der Aphrodite, ist der Freund der Artemis.

τέλος (so Weil für γάμος) Κυθερείας, d. i. γαμήλιον τέλος, die Weihe der Liebesgöttin, die Hoch- zeit. Vgl. τέλος θαλεροῖο γάμοιο Hom. v 74. Κυθερεία heißt Aphro- dite schon Hom. 9 288, Hes. Theog. 198 ( ὅτι προσέκυρσε Κυθήροις). Die Insel Kythera, eine alte Kolonie der Phönizier, war wie Zypern ( Κύπρις) ein Mittelpunkt des orien- talischen Aphroditekultus (Astarte).
