Notes on the current edition

Menexenus

1. The second Sicilian expedition took place in 413 B.C.
2. This is an exaggeration if the occasion is that mentioned in Thucyd. viii. 9 ff., when ten empty ships were captured. But possibly the reference is to the victory at Cyzicus , B.C. 410, when sixty ships were taken or sunk.
3. This refers to the Spartan treaty with Tissaphernes, B.C. 412, and the subsequent cooperation of the Persians against Athens .
4. The battle of Mytilene was fought in 407 B.C.
5. At the battle of Arinusae, 406 B.C., twenty-five ships’ crews were lost.
