Leader of the Chorus

But we 815 could name many amongst you who do quite as much, and who are, even more than ourselves, gluttons, parasites, cheats and kidnappers of slaves. 820 We know how to keep our property better than you. We still have our cylinders, our beams, our baskets and our sunshades; 825 whereas many among you have lost the wood of your spears as well as the iron, and many others have cast away their bucklers on the battlefield.

Line 823

τὸ σκιάδειον·

The neuter singular article τὸ modifies σκιάδειον, a hapax legomenon in Aristophanes (and rare in extant comedy generally), referring to a small tent or shelter made of woven mats or reeds, specifically associated with the Thesmophoria festival where women constructed such enclosures. The term's rarity and the specific ritual context of its use—distinguishing it from generic σκήνη (stage tent) or σκηνή (dramatic tent)—warrants attention for its precise denotation of a temporary, utilitarian structure rather than a permanent building.
