Come, my chief! come with speed! Or, if haply at hand,
On the height where the curved altars stand,
Thou art hallowing with oxen in sacrifice slain
Yonder shrine of Poseidon, dread lord of the main,
Hie thee hither! Be swift! The blind stranger intends
1495
To thee, to thy friends,
To thy city, for burdens imposed, just amends.
Haste thee, King! Hear our cry!

Heran! Komm, o komm, ob sonst irgendwo,
Ob in der Eb'ne hoch

At Neptune's altar leave the sacrifice
And hither fly, for Ql^ dipus, to thee
And to tliy country grateful, waits to pay
Thy bounties. Haste, O Theseus ! to receive them.

Hither, my son, haste hither, if perchance
On the shore's lowest verge thy pious hand
Burns offerings on the altar to the god,
That rules the ocean, hallow'd, hither come.

The stranger, grateful for thy courteous deeds,
Just recompense to thee, thy state, thy friends
Wishes to pay: come then, O king, with speed.

mvp-comment-1028-2 In 1491 εἴτ’ should perh. be εἴγ’ , but is intelligible if we suppose the thought to be,—Come (if thou art near, and at leisure),— or if thou art sacrificing, nevertheless quit the altar, and come.

1495. mvp-comment-794-1 ἁγίζων does not necessarily imply that the altar was being used for the first time. It was in a manner consecrated afresh for every sacrifice.

1496-1499. mvp-comment-795-1 σε.. παρασχεῖν For the accusatives πρὸς τὸ σημαινόμενον after the notion of benefiting, see Essay on Language § 16. p. 23. They are however first governed of ἐπαξιοῖ. The stranger honours thee, and thy city, and thy friends, claiming to render you a just meed for good received. πόλισμα καὶ φίλους, i. e. Athens and the Coloniatae. See Introd. The lacuna (= τοίγαρ or αὐτός) was filled up by Tricilinius with σπεῦσον. Elmsley, reading ᾄσσ', notes the absence of three syllables. Verbum σπεῦσον deest in antiquis libris, additum in Triclinianis. Id cur recentiores critici vel damnaverint, quum non ineptum sit, nec sciamus non esse e codicibus sumptum, vel posthabuerint deterioribus conjecturis, non assequor. Herm.
