My path slopes downward, and before my death
I would confirm to Athens and to thee
My promised boon.

Wohl werth des Mitleids, Dedipus, erscheinst du selbst
Und deine Töchter! Aber da du meinem Land
Dich jezt zum Helfer selbst erbeutst mit diesem Wort:
So will ich treulich rathen, was dir frommen kann.

Antigone
That none approach the place, that none address
With vows the hallow'd ground in which he lies:
Obeying this, he told me I should hold
These realms from hostile insult always safe.
The god my promise heard, and the firm oath
Of Jove which all things hears.

If such his charge,

With meek submission to his will we yield.
But send us to Ogygian Thebes, if there
Haply the demon Rage, athirst for blood,
Rushing between our brothers, we may check.

1508. mvp-comment-801-1 ῥοπὴ βίου μοι i. e. τὸ τὸν βίον μοι ῥέπειν. The dative depends on the verbal notion in ῥοπή. It is my life that is verging to the grave. In O. T. 961, which has been compared with this line, ῥοπή has an active meaning.

1509. mvp-comment-802-1 μὴ ψεύσας θανεῖν i. e. τελέσαι πρὶν θανεῖν. For this inversion, see Essay on Language § 42. p. 80, and cp. Thuc. 1.20, δράσαντές τι καὶ κινδυνεῖσαι.
